Opinion: Key players must step up if Spurs are to beat Leicester City

After returning from Greece – where Spurs drew 2-2 with Olympiacos in their Champions League opener, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are back in Premier League action today as they travel to the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City.

This is set to be a tough test, and Spurs’ key players must be on form if they are to come away with maximum points.

Against Olympiacos on Wednesday night, too many key players performed well below par. The likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Harry Kane – despite scoring – were not at their best, and this cannot afford to happen again against a dangerous Leicester side.

If Harry Kane gets a chance, he will score a goal, and is ever reliable for Tottenham from the penalty spot, but his overall play in the last few months has not been at his dazzling best. Harry Kane’s record against Leicester is very impressive, scoring 13 goals in 12 matches in all competitions (Transfer Markt), so it would be brave to suggest he won’t once again get on the scoresheet against the Foxes.

Eriksen must step up his game and start dictating the play, like he did when he came on against Aston Villa in the first game of the season. When on form, he can be the difference, but against Olympiacos, he was woeful. The less said about his performance, the better. Lucas Moura earned himself a start on Wednesday night, but Mauricio may well go with Eriksen, Dele and Son for this encounter.

Spurs have to win games like this if they are to finish anywhere near the top of the Premier League table. It will be a stern test, but if the team can play, and counter attack with pace, like against Palace last week, it will be a difficult day for Brendan Rodgers and Leicester City.
