Opinion: Make or break time for Dele Alli this season

It was hardly a dream season for Dele Alli last year in any competition, as the midfield man struggled to string together consistently high performances.

Alli managed just seven goals and eight assists in all competitions during the last campaign, despite playing 38 matches (TransferMarkt).

However, I believe the stats are rather harsh on the young Englishman. We have to remember that, although Alli has been around for a while, he is still only 23-years-old.

Dele has progressed incredibly well since Tottenham bought him from MK Dons, even if he did somewhat stall last year. But, the midfielder set such high standards for himself in his first few seasons that we almost come to expect too much from such a young player.

Alli endured multiple injuries last season and was also pushed into a deeper position at times to accommodate the likes of Eriksen, Lucas, and Son.

In my opinion, he is at his best when playing just behind Harry Kane as a centre-forward type attacking midfielder, making late runs into the box and picking the balls up in the pockets.

However, it could still be somewhat of a make or break season in Alli’s career this year.

The 23-year-old could well find himself up against the likes of Eriksen, Lamela, Lucas, and perhaps even Lo Celso or Fernandes for just a couple of starting spots this season (Standard).

Alli could rise to the top and show us what he is made of, or he could find himself edged out and dropped to the bench.

One thing is for sure, he needs to improve his pre-season form, and fast!
