Opinion: Our match report from Tottenham 2-1 Leeds United

Tottenham Hotspur were forced to come from behind after a woeful first-half display against Leeds United this evening, but Antonio Conte eventually marked his first Premier League home match in N17 with a 2-1 victory.

The Lilywhites started the match at a sluggish tempo, something that has been frustratingly consistent this season.

The midfield were overrun by a high-pressing Leeds side, while Spurs themselves sat back and allowed the vistors to advance, much to the dismay of the Tottenham fans.

In what seemed like an inevitability, Leeds eventually took the lead just before half-time when Dan James poked home a delcious cross after Emerson Royal was beaten on the right side.

Conte’s men were booed down the tunnel by the 60,000 fans who had turned up to watch on a Sunday evening, with the atmosphere leaving a lot to be desired.

However, the Tottenham that returned for the second 45 was a different animal, showing high energy and high pressing from the get-go.

A stunned Leeds almost conceded a couple of times in the early second half exchanges when Son and Kane both hit the woodwork.

Just as it seemed it might not be Tottenham’s day, some great work on the left allowed Lucas Moura to cut the ball back to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who swept it home with his left boot. Game on!

Spurs continued to push forward on the front foot in the minutes that followed, with Lucas Moura eventually winning a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Eric Dier’s deflected effort rebounded and fell perfectly to an on-rushing Sergio Reguilon who gleefully tapped home his first Spurs goal.

With some determined defending, dangerous counter-attacking and Conte conducting the Tottenham crowd from the sidelines, all three points were secured under the lights.
