Tottenham Hotspur played out a 1-1 draw at home to Sporting Lisbon last night in the Champions League, ending in dramatic fashion as Harry Kane’s 95th-minute winner was controversially ruled out for offside.
Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:
Hugo Lloris – 4 – Marcus Edwards’ goal was right in the corner but I feel like Hugo will be disappointed he let something of that pace get past him. What on Earth he was doing sprinting off his line to the corner flag at the end of the game, I will never know.
Matt Doherty – 5 – Beyond a few early runs in the first 20 minutes, he wasn’t too much of an attacking threat and struggled on the ball in tight areas at times. Delivery was very inconsistent.
Cristian Romero – 7 – Always wants to make things happen. One of the few Spurs players to pass well and move into space to get an attack going. Also threw some no-nonsense slide tackles in there too.
Eric Dier – 6 – Missed a couple of good chances to score and didn’t cover himself in glory at times when put under pressure at the back. Not awful, but not his best game.
Ben Davies – 5 – Really struggled on the ball last night. Gave it away a fair few times, whether it was being dispossessed or passing straight to a Sporting player. Perhaps why Lenglet came on for the end of the game.
Ivan Perisic – 6 – Got into a lot of crossing positions but the balls themselves were hit and miss. Have to give him some credit for the assist from a corner, but Perisic seemed to struggle physically at times.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 4 – Really poor. Makes you wonder whether Spurs rushed him back too much. He wasn’t his usual calm and assured self on or off the ball. Seemed half a yard off the pace last night.
Rodrigo Bentancur – 8 – Gives you so much consistency in the middle of the pitch. Tottenham’s best player by a mile, even without his goal. Rarely misplaced a pass and always looked to get Spurs moving, even when they were playing poorly.
Lucas Moura – 6 – His first start of the season. Inconsistent on the ball and gave it away a fair few times. But at least he tried to attack his man and make things happen. Also offered nice balance at the end at right-wing-back.
Harry Kane – 6 – We should be calling him the match-winner, alas it was not Tottenham’s day in the VAR room. Fed off scraps last night, but still came up with some creative passes despite being crowded out by the Sporting defence.
Heung-min Son – 4 – Just wasn’t in the game at all. Ran into trouble all game long and struggled with his first touch and passing in tight areas.
Substitutes:
Bryan Gil – 7 – Really impressive cameo off the bench. Took the Sporting players on and made things happen for Spurs – one of the only players to do so.
Clement Lenglet – N/A
Emerson Royal – N/A
