Opinion: Player ratings from Spurs’ pre-season win over Colchester United

Tottenham Hotspur were back in action this evening with a simple pre-season win over Colchester United, ramping up their fitness and match sharpness ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Let’s take a look at how the players got on (in the context of pre-season):

Alfie Whiteman – 7 – Largely untroubled in the first half but did have a couple of things to do and did them well. A quality diving save in the second 45.

Tobi Omole – 6.5 – A solid, no-nonsense display at the back from Omole, doing a job at left-back. Didn’t get forward much at all, but likely more by instruction than choice. Caught out positionally from time to time, but that is to be expected.

Eric Dier – 6 – Didn’t have his shooting… head… on today? Missed a few good chances from set-pieces. Won some important headers at the back though. Captain on the day again but failed to really marshall that backline. They had a fair few problems back there.

Cameron Carter-Vickers – 6.5 – Another neat and tidy performance from the USA international without being that eye-catching. Covered well for Paskotsi at times.

Maksim Paskotsi – 7 – A couple of nervy moments to start with but grew into the game and always offered an attacking outlet on the right. We have to remember that his natural position is centre-back, which is likely why he got done in behind a couple of times.

Harry Winks – 7 – Sloppy on the ball to start with, got his pocket picked. Grew into the game after that and picked some nice positive passes through the lines.

Oliver Skipp – 7.5 – That volleyed pass to Bergwijn! Sensational. Such a tidy performance in the middle of the park, both on and off the ball. Class player with a big future.

Dele Alli – 7.5 – Looks as though Nuno wants Dele to sit in a three then join attacks late and he did that well today. Some nice interplay with the front three. Got himself a scrappy goal towards the end of the first half. We’ll forget that air shot.

Lucas Moura – 9 – Looked class today, albeit in a pre-season friendly. Seems to be the closest to full fitness and sharpness out of the squad. Some expert dribbling and creativity. Created the opener and scored the second with a great header.

Steven Bergwijn – 8 – Made a great run for the opening goal and unselfishly put it on a plate for Son. Could have had a penalty soon after. Full of pace and running in behind today.

Heung-min Son – 10 – Started off with some sublime set-pieces into the box. A nice tap-in on 11 minutes to welcome himself back. An assist from a corner on 14 minutes and another for Dele on 37. Not a bad first day back for Sonny.

Substitutes:

Japhet Tanganga – 4.5 – Could tell it was his first game back but minutes are important.

Dane Scarlett – 6.5 – It was offside but he finished that chance very well. Then almost created one with some hard work in behind against the defence.

Nile John – 7 – Looks to be full of running and gets forward really well. So athletic and creative. Can’t wait to see more of him.

Malachi Fagan-Walcott – 5 – A nice header away from goal after coming on.

Brooklyn Lyons-Foster – 5 – Looks to be a very composed player on the ball.

Kallum Cesay – 4.5 – Didn’t get on the ball that much but good minutes under the belt.

Harvey White – 5 – Knocked it about nicely in midfield. Very tidy player.

Alfie Devine – 5.5 – Looked so bright and creative after coming on. Crazy that he is just 16.

Jack Clarke – 5 – A couple of nice runs and take ons during his cameo.

Troy Parrott – 5 – Much better all-round striker play today than last week.
