Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Man City

Tottenham Hotspur continued their winning streak today with a 1-0 win over Man City, thanks to Harry Kane’s 267th goal for the club.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 8 – Didn’t have any huge saves to make but he did his routine stuff well and I haven’t seen him that dominant coming off his line in a long time.

Emerson Royal – 9 – Man of the Match. The Porro signing seemed to light a fire under him. Defensively he was as solid as I have seen him, while also being such a driving threat going forward. He was everywhere today!

Cristian Romero – 7 – Bumped down a little bit for the red card, but all things considered it wasn’t the worst second yellow to pick up. He got stuck into those City players today and didn’t give them an inch. Fantastic performance for 86 mins.

Eric Dier – 9 – A rock at the back. The blocks, the tackles, the headers, the passes out under pressure, the long-range pings. Dier was just on it today. When he plays like this, it makes you wish we could see it 38 games a year.

Ben Davies – 9 – Much like Dier, Davies put his body on the line today. Some important blocks and clearances, while also being so calm and confident when playing out from the back. He even added to the attacks with his underlaps.

Ivan Perisic – 7 – Not his best game. He was better defensively today than last time out against City, but he was sloppy on the ball and waste some simple passing opportunities to get key attacks started. Still had his moments, of course.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 9 – The man to rival Emerson for MOTM. Hojbjerg turned over possession and assisted Tottenham’s goal, and covered every blade of grass in the minutes after that. Felt like a real captain’s performance, and Spurs need captains all over the pitch.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 8 – The man doesn’t lose the ball. He kept Spurs ticking over for fun at times, finding all the pockets that allowed the team to turn defence into attack. It’s easy to see why Spurs crumble without him in the XI.

Dejan Kulusevski – 8 – Not his best game ever, but he gave Lewis and Ake a torrid time on the right side. He was so strong and tricky that even his mistakes caused a physical problem for Man City. Such a classy player Spurs have here.

Harry Kane – 8.5 – The difference maker. 267 goals for Tottenham and he breaks the record with a winner against City. His general play was also near-perfect, as it usually is against Man City. Only thing missing was that second goal.

Heung-min Son – 7.5 – Much more like himself today, turning and running at the Man City defence. Didn’t quite have the end product but he looked so much more confident after that brace last weekend.

Subs:

Ryan Sessegnon – 6 – Came on to add fresh defensive legs down the left.

Yves Bissouma – N/A

Davinson Sanchez – N/A
