Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Wolves

Tottenham Hotspur continued their fine start to the season with a 1-0 win over Wolves this afternoon, although it was far from straightforward for the Lilywhites.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 8 – Not too many saves to make but a great 1v1 stop against Traore. His early long-range distribution is really coming along. Congrats on the 300 appearances, skipper!

Japhet Tanganga – 6.5 – If last week was Tanganga’s best game ever, this week was a humbling awakening. The pace, power and trickery of Traore was a problem from minute 1. Silly yellow card put pressure on himself too. Improved as the game went on.

Davinson Sanchez – 5.5 – A return to normality I would argue. Sanchez struggled so much with the pace of Traore and the runs of Jimenez. Looked very shaky throughout.

Eric Dier – 7 – Very dominant in the air as normal and defended his box well. Stepped out, gave the ball away and almost cost Spurs a goal in the second half. Apart from that one moment, he was very good. Almost scored late on.

Sergio Reguilon – 7 – Great pass to find Dele in the box for the penalty. Caught out too many times defensively by Semedo runs in behind for my liking. He did work incredibly hard to get that result over the line though.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 7.5 – Good work off the ball but perhaps needed to find some more progressive passes on it. No real complaints though, a tidy performance. Grew as the game went on and that nutmeg is worth an extra 0.5.

Oliver Skipp – 7 – Similar to Hojbjerg, I wanted to see some more driving runs and balls in behind to the runners. However, he was very neat and tidy throughout.

Dele Alli – 8 – Let’s say winning the penalty was… clever. Took it very well. Interesting to see him on spot-kicks over Son. Worked hard and covered lots of ground. Threw himself in front of some shots too.

Lucas Moura – 5.5 – Struggled to get into the game down the right and gave the ball away a lot. I wanted to see him come central and drive Spurs up the pitch.

Heung-min Son – 6 – Very isolated in the first half. Arguably should have found Bergwijn when breaking away for a second. Went off early for Kane. Not his day today.

Steven Bergwijn – 7 – Full of running as normal. Still needs to improve that final pass and/or shot. Onside or offside, the square to Dele should have found his man. Overall, a decent performance as he was involved in most of Spurs’ good attacking play.

Substitutes:

Giovani Lo Celso – 5 – Didn’t get on the ball a whole lot after coming on.

Harry Kane – 6 – A few nice moments during his cameo. So much calmness and quality on the ball. Had one decent chance that he missed but may have been offside anyway. Spurs need this guy back in the starting XI.

Harry Winks – N/A
