Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s 3-2 loss to Man United

Tottenham Hotspur continued their trend of one win followed by one defeat this evening when they fell to a 3-2 loss at Old Trafford.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 6 – Some people gave him stick for the United opener but I think that’s harsh. He never saves that. Beyond that, Hugo didn’t do anything wrong so can’t complain.

Matt Doherty – 6.5 – A real threat going forward down the right, arriving late in the box and making diagonal runs. A couple of iffy moments at the back against Sancho and co.

Cristian Romero – 5.5 – Not quite as dominant in the early challenge as we have seen him. Got confused over who to mark at the corner when Ronaldo scored the winner.

Eric Dier – 5 – Probably should have closed down the initial shot from Ronaldo and I think stepping up was the wrong call to make in the second goal. Went close with a header.

Ben Davies – 6 – Scored a nice goal, although it was ruled offside. Looked nice and tidy on the ball. There seemed to be a lot of back post space on his side for United to exploit though.

Sergio Reguilon – 6 – First start back from COVID and he looked a little off it. In attack he looked dangerous and forced Spurs’ second but defensively he was short. He was the one left behind playing United onside in the second goal and failed to track a few times.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 5 – Had a bit of a nightmare first 15 minutes in which he was pickpocketed and gave the ball away a few times. Grew into the game but Spurs still lacked a little something defensively in the engine room. Some nice diagonals though.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 6.5 – I thought he had a pretty well-rounded game, albeit unspectacular. Looked after the ball and covered a lot of ground off it. Also got stuck into the challenge and ran his socks off for the team.

Dejan Kulusevski – 7 – Just looks after the ball so well. Every time he picked it up on the right, it looked like he might dance through. Did really well to win the penalty.

Heung-min Son – 6.5 – Had loads of space to work with and used it well to be a constant thorn in Man United’s side, but missed a big chance in the second half and drifted out of the game a little.

Harry Kane – 6 – A well-taken penalty to level things in the first half. He struggled to pull the strings as we know he can and people weren’t exactly making chances for him.

Substitutes:

Lucas Moura – 5 – Came on towards the end of the game to help Spurs find a third but he wasn’t able to influence proceedings.

Steven Bergwijn – N/A

Harry Winks – N/A
