Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s 5-1 demolition of Newcastle United

Tottenham Hotspur are up to fourth in the Premier League thanks to an impressive 5-1 win over Newcastle United.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 7 – Didn’t really have a save of any note to make and looked a little dodgy off his line at one point, but I was impressed with his distribution.

Emerson Royal – 8.5 – Came in from the cold and struggled in the first 45, although he always made himself available to get into the box. In the second half he was much faster and more positive in his thinking, even grabbing a goal.

Cristian Romero – 8.5 – So aggressive against Saint-Maximin and barely give him a sniff all game. He got the balance between quick challenges and fouls perfect today.

Eric Dier – 8.5 – Solid as always in the centre of defence. He is the leader Spurs need at the back, keeping things calm and organised even at 5-1.

Ben Davies – 9 – A rare Ben Davies goal and what an important one it was, heading home minutes after Newcastle took the lead. Also defended superbly throughout.

Matt Doherty – 9 – With Reguilon out injured, Doherty was tasked with playing on his weak foot at left-wing-back. His superbly-timed runs saw him come away with a goal and an assist. Superb display!

Rodrigo Bentancur – 9.5 – Wins the ball back. Keeps hold of it. Never wastes a pass. And picks out the attackers with accuracy. Bentancur ran the show in the middle of midfield today! My man of the match.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 8.5 – Sits back in the back three to allow Romero to roam forwards and the wing-backs to push high. Often under-appreciated but a fantastic performance again.

Dejan Kulusevski – 8 – Another game, another assist for Dejan. Every touch with the ball is so precise and has real meaning behind it. Always runs through brick walls for the team and looks like a constant danger man.

Heung-min Son – 9 – Back to his best today. One of Son’s most consistent 90 minutes in months. Drove at the heart of the Newcastle defence time and time again, getting a goal and an assist, but he could have had more. Loses 0.5 for giving away the silly free-kick for Newcastle’s goal.

Harry Kane – 9 – He wasn’t on the scoresheet and that will bother him, but Kane was at the heart of everything Spurs did well. The more the game opened up in the second 45, the more Harry just picked Newcastle off with his pin-point passing.

Substitutes:

Harry Winks – 7 – Came on and kept the tempo nice and high for the final 25 minutes.

Steven Bergwijn – 7.5 – Great to see him grab a much-deserved goal!

Lucas Moura – 7.5 – What a nutmeg and assist for Bergwijn’s goal!
