Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s awful defeat to Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur fell with a whimper in the North London Derby this evening, failing to take the game to their fierce rivals and losing 2-1.

Let’s take a look at how the indiivdiaul players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 5 – Didn’t really get anywhere near anything today, but that wasn’t necessarily his fault. Nothing he could do with the deflected goal or the penalty.

Matt Doherty – 2 – Arsenal clearly picked him out at the start and targeted him. Got skinned repeatedly which eventually led to Arsenal’s opening goal.

Davinson Sanchez – 6 – Defended the box well and seemed to have a decent handle of Lacazette one-on-one. By far the best defender out there and I feel he was unlucky with the pen. He went to block the shot and Lacazette happened to spoon it wide.

Toby Alderweireld – 5 – Like Sanchez, he was doing well defending crosses in the box. Nothing he could do about the deflection for the goal but lacked his usual leadership at the back.

Sergio Reguilon – 5 – Wasn’t really able to get forward due to the defensive attitude. The one time he did get forward, it led to the Lamela goal. Did some good work at the back but also gets a little carried away at times.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 3 – He was pulled over to the right side to help Matt Doherty but really struggled to get on the ball and pass out from the back. Arguably his worst PL performance since opening day against Everton.

Tanguy Ndombele – 3 – The man in there to link defence and attack in the big games, Tanguy really struggled with the pace and physicality of it all today.

Lucas Moura – 7.5 – Always a willing runner in behind and when closing down. Got the assist for Lamela’s goal and looked dangerous in bursts. In the final 20 minutes, he was the one source of attacking intent. A real silver lining performance.

Gareth Bale – 3 – Barely got a touch in the first half, while also not doing enough to track back and help Doherty. The one nice moment was his raking ball to Reguilon that led to the Lamela goal.

Heung-min Son – N/A – Went off with a hamstring injury very early.

Harry Kane – 4.5 – The most isolated I have seen Kane in a long time. Came alive at the end but it was too little too late.

Substitutes:

Erik Lamela – 5 – The goal and the red card. A five seems about right maybe?

Moussa Sissoko – 3 – Way too negative with his passing after coming on.

Dele Alli – 5 – Looked okay and showed some nice skills on the ball.
