Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s Carabao Cup win over Stoke City

Tottenham Hotspur qualified for the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup this evening with a comfortable 3-1 win over Stoke City.

Let’s take a look at how the players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 4 – Barely had anything to do in the first half. Perhaps should have done better with the Stoke goal.

Matt Doherty – 5 – Seems a little out of his depth in tight areas on the right-hand side but played okay with some nice link up with Bale. Woeful defending for the Stoke goal when he got sucked across and left his man unmarked.

Davinson Sanchez – 5 – Barely had a kick of the ball in the centre of defence. Also got sucked across for the Stoke goal.

Eric Dier – 5 – Stepped out of defence well a few times, but got stuck in no man’s land for the Stoke goal. His error really created the space in behind for them.

Ben Davies – 8 – The most active defender for Tottenham this evening. The Welshman got on the ball a lot, swung in some nice crosses, and knocked it around well. Deserved his goal on the night.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 8 – Won the ball well and looked after it nicely. Stepped forward more than usual too.

Harry Winks – 9 – A positive influence in that Spurs midfield. Winks got his head up tonight and looked for some more complicated forward passes. Set up the Bale goal with a great cross and found Dele with a lovely driven ball at the end of the first half.

Dele Alli – 8 – This is the Dele we know and love. The trickster must have beaten Stoke players five or six times in the first half alone, only to be hauled down more often than not. Got into some great areas and looked a constant threat.

Lucas Moura – 6 – Looked lively cutting inside from the left and linking up with the likes of Kane and Alli. Almost found Bale with a wonderful reverse ball in the first half.

Gareth Bale – 8 – What a goal that was. I cannot overstate how difficult that skill was from Bale. Perhaps Spurs need to use him more in and around the box these days.

Harry Kane – 8 – The odd nice bit of link-up play around the box but Kane didn’t come alive until the second half when Spurs needed him most.

Substitutes:

Heung-min Son – 7 – Deserved to score after coming on but a shocking decision from the linesman denied him.

Moussa Sissoko – 7 – Picked up a nice assist for the Kane goal and added solidity to the midfield.

Erik Lamela – 6.5 – Added a bit of bite to that Spurs midfield.
