Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur were back to losing ways this evening after a brief change of pace against Man City at the weekend, following up with a 1-0 defeat to Burnley.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 6 – A couple of routine saves and one really nice stop from Rodriguez. Wasn’t a lot Hugo could do tonight and can’t be blamed for the goal.

Emerson Royal – 5 – Really struggles once he gets into that final third which is a shame because Spurs got some joy down the right. Crosses and shots were not on point again.

Cristian Romero – 5.5 – Really tried to drive and make some things happen off the right side but there wasn’t a whole lot of space for him. Looked solid and aggressive but, in the end, was punished for getting beaten at the back post by Ben Mee.

Eric Dier – 6 – Calm and comfortable at the back. As an individual, he defended and passed the ball pretty well. Nothing to shout about, either fantastic or awful.

Ben Davies – 6 – Much like Eric Dier, Davies put in a solid defensive shift without contributing anything outrageous or exciting. Maybe some more underlaps would have been good.

Ryan Sessegnon – 5.5 – Gave the free-kick away that led to the goal, albeit harsh. Sessegnon put in a few nice crosses, but also lacked that killer instinct in the final third.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 5 – Struggled out there in tough conditions, which was made even tougher when he slipped and injured himself. Didn’t make it out for the second half.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 5.5 – Saw plenty of the ball but struggled to find passes between the lines to Kane and Son. His main role seemed to be recycling it out wide.

Dejan Kulusevski – 7.5 – If I had to pick a Spurs MOTM, it would be Kulusevski. A rare creative spark when playing in the right pocket and also still looked a threat at RWB. Unlucky not to get a goal at some point.

Heung-min Son – 6 – A few nice breakaways where he got to show his pace and a great free-kick that saw Kane hit the bar, but he also wasted a couple of great opportunities. Had a great chance to pass to Kane in the first half and went quiet at times.

Harry Kane – 7.5 – Really tried to make things happen out there. Lovely range of passing when dropping deep, hit the crossbar with a good header, and had a good shot or two from range. On a cold night in Burnley, he was feeding off scraps.

Substitutes:

Harry Winks – 5 – Didn’t progress the ball enough after coming on at half-time and, much like Hojbjerg, was mainly recycling simple passes.

Lucas Moura – 5 – Looked very sloppy after coming on and wasted one good chance that came his way.

Steven Bergwijn – 6 – Actually looked very bright and had one decent chance that was well held by Nick Pope.
