Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s win over Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur are off to a winning start under Ryan Mason after a 2-1 win at home to Southampton. Let’s have a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 8 – One of the only players who can hold his head up after that first half. Kept Spurs in it when Southampton should have been out of sight.

Serge Aurier – 6 – Looked a bit all over the place at the back and wasn’t his usual attacking threat going forward either. Improved as the match went on.

Toby Alderweireld – 7 – The best of the Spurs defenders. Came in with some good last-ditch blocks and headers away. His long raking balls were also a good outlet.

Eric Dier – 6 – So slow on the ball when trying to pass out from the back, it kept the tempo at a manageable pace. Improved in the second half.

Sergio Reguilon – 7 – Been out of form since returning from injury but today was his best yet. Still defensively questionable but a real threat going forward.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 8 – Wasn’t able to impose himself on the game as normal in the first half but was an absolute general in the second.

Tanguy Ndombele – 5 – Looked so far off the pace in midfield today. He is meant to be the man who carries Spurs up the pitch but was unable to gain yards today.

Giovani Lo Celso – 4 – Looks very short of sharpness. I am still adamant that Lo Celso is not an attacking midfielder, he is best as a deep-lying centre-mid.

Lucas Moura – 7 – Definitely looked one of the sharpest player in attack for Spurs. However, the striker position took him out the game a little at times. Much better in the number 10 role in the second half.

Gareth Bale – 8 – A couple of nice moments here and there in the first 45. In the second, he had more time on the ball and dictated the attacking play. Superb goal.

Heung-min Son – 8 – Really struggled to get involved in the game on the left. Came into it more when drifting inside in the second half. Took the offside goal well and a nice penalty.

Substitutes:

Harry Winks – 6.5 – Second chance time for Winksy. He knocked it around well.

Erik Lamela – 5.5 – Didn’t do too much after coming on.

Steven Bergwijn – N/A – Nice to see him back out there.
