Opinion: Pochettino needs to change his captain now – and this is why

Tottenham Hotspur are in dire need of refreshing in terms of the squad and the set-up in North London, and I believe that Pochettino should start with his captain.

Hugo Lloris has worn the armband for a number of years now, but he is inching towards the twilight of his career and I’m not sure he is what Spurs need right now.

The Frenchman didn’t really put a foot wrong against Bayern, despite conceding seven goals, but I didn’t see any form of leadership from him.

I want the captain to be rallying the troops and giving players an earful when they need it, but Hugo doesn’t seem like that kind of character, and it is difficult to do that from between the sticks anyway.

Obviously, the natural successor would be vice-captain and England captain, Harry Kane, who has vast experience in leading teams from the front.

This would also give the boyhood Spurs fan an extra incentive to stay put at Spurs during this rough period.

Not only this, but I would want to see Harry Winks promoted to vice-captain as I think he has absolutely everything needed to fill those boots. A boyhood fan, willing to die for the shirt, always vocal, what more could you want?

Something has to change, and without the transfer window being open, this should be Pochettino’s first step.
