Opinion: Spurs’ next two games are a golden chance to silence the doubters

Tottenham’s form so far this season and overall in 2019 has been inconsistent, painful and just strange.

Spurs sit seventh in the Premier League table on eight points and are already ten points off Liverpool at the top after six games (Premier League Official).

Spurs’ next two games are at home, against Southampton on Saturday and then versus Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday (Spurs Official).

These games provide Mauricio Pochettino and his players with a golden chance to clinch two big wins and silence the doubters after a prolonged period of rockiness.

First up is Southampton in the Premier League. Tottenham have to claim all three points after losing at Leicester and sitting on just eight points from a possible eighteen. After slipping up at home to Newcastle, Pochettino’s side simply cannot afford to drop any more points at home to lesser teams.

The players must perform like they did against Crystal Palace, and ideally kill the game off in the first half whilst bringing back the high pressing game which made us such a threat during our last season at White Hart Lane.

After this clash, Spurs turn their attention back to the Champions League when they host German champions Bayern Munich. In matchday one, Pochettino’s player let slip a 2-0 lead in Greece and came away with just a point (BBC Sport), a win at home to Bayern under the lights would be a big statement. It would show that the club are not in as bad a state as some are suggesting, and can still cause compete with the best in Europe.

Tottenham have to win their next two home games in my opinion. Against Southampton, there are simply no excuses, and against Bayern Munich, although it will be a tough test, the fans have to get behind the players, create a fantastic atmosphere and make it another European night to remember. If Spurs win these two games, the criticism won’t completely go away, but things will look a lot rosier.
