Opinion: Spurs should take the money bid on Lo Celso and go for this player

Tottenham Hotspur may not have bought a single player in the last 16 months, but reports suggest they have finally taken a plunge into the transfer market.

Many media outlets, including the BBC, have now reported that Spurs have made a sensational £53m bid for Real Betis attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

This would represent a club record signing, overtaking the £42m acquisition of Davison Sanchez from Ajax (Guardian). However, Lo Celso is said to have an £88m buyout clause in his current deal (BBC).

So, is Lo Celso the right man to go for?

I would argue no. In my opinion, that £53m should be taken and offered straight to Leicester City for the services of James Maddison.

Spurs should have purchased the playmaker last summer, when the Foxes scooped him up for just £20m (BBC), but they should now swallow their pride and get the player in.

Maddison has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water in the Leicester side, so imagine what he could achieve with the likes of Harry Kane and Heung Min Son around him.

He scored seven goals and set up a further seven in his first season in the league, including three free-kicks, as well as registering 205 crosses in 36 appearances (Premier League).

Maddison offers Prem experience, youth, homegrown status, assists, goals, free-kicks, crossing ability, skills, and he only looks as if he will get even better.

If Pochettino and Levy are looking for a big playmaker-style signing, I believe they should look no further than Maddison.
