Opinion: The five steps Pochettino must now make or else risk losing the trust of the fans

Despite leading after just one minute, it was another loss in the Premier League this season for Spurs as they visited Anfield yesterday evening.

Harry Kane put the Lilywhites ahead after 47 seconds, before Jordan Henderson equalised and Serge Aurier handed Mo Salah a penalty to win the match.

After yet another disappointing result, I want to take a look at the five steps I think Poch must now take or else risk losing the faith and trust of his fans:

Step One – Drop Serge Aurier –

This guy simply cannot be anywhere near the team. He is toxic to that Spurs defence and constantly seems like a walking red card or penalty. That is two or three times now this season that he has directly contributed to a loss. The man is not good enough. Put faith in Foyth and Walker-Peters for now.

Step Two – Filter out Christian Eriksen –

This one may take a few weeks as Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela get back to full fitness, but Eriksen needs to be filtered out. He doesn’t want to be at Spurs next year, which is fine, but Tottenham should not be accommodating his lack of effort and quality as a result. Drop him now, sell him in January, and replace him.

Step Three – Filter out Danny Rose –

Much like Eriksen, this could take a few weeks. For now, Poch should see Ben Davies as his first choice, definitely in big games. Once Ryan Sessegnon is fit and ready, put him in that left-back spot and stick with him.

Put faith in the young players who are committed to Spurs –

I am talking about Davinson Sanchez, Juan Foyth, Ryan Sessegnon, Oliver Skipp, Japhet Tanganga, Troy Parrott, Kyle Walker-Peters. For now, it looks as if they are the future of the club, so give them game time and put faith in them. The only way we can see if they are good enough is to give them extended runs in the team. Fans also cannot complain at the manager if he actively tries to fix this mess.

Invest and sell in January –

Cut out the deadwood – Eriksen, Rose, Aurier, Wanyama, etc. Then use whatever money the club has to invest in new players. I want to see one big name like Dybala or Fernandes, and then a few squad players. A new right-back is also a must, my favourite being Max Aarons.

Final thought –

Stop covering for the failing players Poch. Stop handing starts to those who want out of the club. Give the ones who are committed to the shirt a chance to turn this form around.
