Opinion: The undeniable positive that Spurs fans must thank Eriksen for

I have been one of Christian Eriksen’s biggest critics over the past six months, ever since he admitted that he was open to leaving the club.

Ever since then, the Great Dane has looked out of sorts, with other things on his mind other than getting the three points for Spurs week in, week out.

I questioned his effort and his work rate at the start of the season, but something seems to have changed under Jose Mourinho.

The Special One has come in and instantly made it clear that he will be handing first-team minutes to those who want to be at the club long-term, not those pushing for a route out.

Eriksen has been dropped to the bench and been given a decision to make. Sulk your way to an exit after some great years at Spurs, or finish on a high, while also showing potential new suitors what he is about.

The last few times Eriksen has come in off the bench, he has looked dangerous against tired legs and tired minds, pulling the strings and threading the passes.

Yesterday was no different, as the Danish midfielder managed to set up Vertonghen’s late winner with a delightful corner in the 91st minute.

While I do not think Eriksen should be starting games anymore, it is nice to see that Tottenham have a good option from the bench until he departs.
