Opinion: Three key ways Pochettino should change his team when a ‘Plan B’ is needed

Last week, Pochettino bemoaned his team’s lack of a “Plan B” (Sun). However, looking at the options he has got, there are some potential tactics he could choose. Of course, all of these options only come into play when Spurs are desperate for a goal.

The Speed Option –

Playing both Son and Lucas upfront and allowing Kane to drop into a deeper 10 position. This would allow the team to stretch the defence and create space for the midfield and Kane. If Eriksen or Alli were also on the pitch, they would be able to slot into central midfield and control the play from there!

The New Option –

As a youth team player, many fans are keen to see Troy Parrott make his debut. A player who is keen to make his mark, is likely to shoot on sight and this could be what Spurs need rather than trying to walk it in the net. Opposition defenders would focus on the more well-known players and therefore Troy may be able to make his mark.

The Wing-back Option –

These options are all focused on attacking players but a “Plan B” needs to be all over the pitch. If playing a back 4, it could be altered to dropping a midfielder (likely Sissoko) into defence, pushing the full-backs up high and having a central midfield option of Eriksen and Alli. This would all be very attacking but if we need a goal, we need a goal!
