Opinion: Tottenham player ratings for friendly vs Roma – Second-half

Tottenham Hotspur are only a week away from their first taste of Premier League action, but there is still time for one last pre-season friendly against Roma in Israel.

Let’s take a look at how the players got on in that second half:

Hugo Lloris – 6 – Essentially just had a free ticket to the game in the second half as he watched a pretty low-tempo match in front of him.

Matt Doherty – 6 – Some decent interplay down the right side with Kulusevski at times. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to get in behind as he did in the first 45 and came off after 67 minutes.

Cristian Romero – 7 – Pushed forward and got into the box for a header from a Lenglet cross but was adjudged to have fouled his man. He did have that superb last-ditch challenge on Nicolo Zaniolo though and certainly got stuck in further up the pitch when trying to win the ball back on occasion. Picked up a yellow for putting his hand around a Roma player’s throat. Busy half in the end.

Eric Dier – 6 – No-nonsense would be the polite term for Dier’s second-half performance, which included some clear fouls to break up play. Got turned to send Zaniolo in behind, although Romero rescued him.

Clement Lenglet – 7.5 – Really impressed with his second-half performance. Confident on the ball. Strong on his left foot. Good passing range. A couple of nice challenges. And that burst down the left wing before crossing to Romero. Lots to like.

Ivan Perisic – 7 – I think Perisic was slightly more impressive in the second half, both defensively and offensively. He managed to get in behind down the left more after the break and went close with a couple of efforts.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 6.5 – Not his tidiest performance with a few misplaced passes here and there. However, he always adds positivity and direct forward passing to the Spurs midfield, which is often lacking without him.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 7 – Much better in the second half. Really got stuck in and broke up the play well, before recycling the ball to the more creative players. Seems to thrive when he’s next to Bentancur as their styles complement each other well.

Dejan Kulusevski – 6 – Pretty quiet before going off after 67 minutes. Didn’t get as much space down the right as he did in the first half and also looked a little tired by the end.

Harry Kane – 6 – Kane was either isolated or running into traffic in the second half. It wouldn’t quite happen with the ball at his feet, and others weren’t creating for him. Should have been handed a penalty but somehow the ref gave the foul the other way. Missed a sitter by his standards late on after putting a header over the bar.

Heung-min Son – 6 – Wasn’t really involved before being subbed off in what was a quiet 20 minutes for the Tottenham front three.

Substitutes:

Lucas Moura – 6 – Came on in attack this time around and offered some nice link-up play with Harry Kane.

Richarlison – 6.5 – Went on a mazy run with ten minutes left on the clock. Deserved a goal but run into bodies just before he could pull the trigger.

Emerson Royal – 5.5 – Came on a right-wing-back but didn’t see too much of the ball in meaningful areas.

Ryan Sessegnon – 5.5 – Saw a bit more of the ball than Emerson and delivered a fantastic ball onto the head of Kane with minutes left on the clock, who should have scored.

Fraser Forster – N/A – I’m not sure if he actually touched the ball.
