Opinion: Tottenham player ratings from the 2-0 CL win over Marseille

Tottenham Hotspur are off to a winning start in the Champions League this season, putting two past a ten-men Marseille without reply thanks to a Richarlison brace.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 5 – Made one decent save down to his right, but apart from that had little to do. His distribution was very much below par tonight, plus that strange punch from an easy catch.

Emerson Royal – 6 – A frustrating one from Emerson. Defensively solid as usual, albeit a little sloppy on the ball. But he actually made some great runs in behind tonight, he just wasn’t found by his teammates.

Cristian Romero – 5 – One of the flattest performances of his Spurs career. Didn’t look solid in defence, mistimed a couple of key challenges, and didn’t look as confident on the ball.

Eric Dier – 6.5 – Defensively solid and didn’t give an inch to the Marseille attackers. Also stepped out of defence fairly often and at least tried to make things happen for Spurs.

Clement Lenglet – 5.5 – Didn’t look anywhere near as confident on the ball as he did against Fulham, although it is harsh to criticise him too early. Spurs struggled to find a way out in the first 60 minutes.

Ivan Perisic – 6.5 – Came up with a great assist for Tottenham’s first goal, but he did drift in and out of the game. The one thing you get with Perisic, on or off form, is consistent deliveries into the box.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 7 – A nice assist for Richarlison’s second goal and showed some great energy in the middle of the park, especially in the second half.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 7.5 – Worked his socks off on and off the ball tonight. The one driving force for Spurs who at least tried to keep the tempo ticking over. You always get 100% from Bentancur, even if the performance was sloppy from Spurs tonight.

Richarlison – 8.5 – Taking to life at Spurs like a duck to water. Without Tottenham, or Richarlison for that matter, playing well at all, the Brazilian still popped up when it mattered to nod home two great headers. That’s what you need from your forwards.

Harry Kane – 5.5 – Came up with the odd decent pass here and there, but apart from that Kane was way off it tonight. Didn’t look sharp in front of goal or with the ball at his feet, for the most part.

Heung-min Son – 5 – Way off it again today. Has the look of a forward who is trying too hard at the moment. The goals and performances will come for Sonny, we just need to be patient, as does he. Everything felt a little forced today.

Substitutes:

Dejan Kulusevski – 7.5 – Came on and looked the best player on the pitch. Loves taking on defenders and, more often than not, wins the battle. Class performance off the bench.

Ben Davies – 6.5 – Didn’t do a whole lot after coming on, but he did put in a goal-saving block in the dying seconds to protect the clean sheet. Classic Davies.

Japhet Tanganga – 5.5 – Replaced Romero with 20 minutes to go and knocked the ball about pretty well. Went close with a header too.

Matt Doherty – N/A

Yves Bissouma – N/A
