Opinion: Tottenham player ratings from the 2-0 win over Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur continued their win-loss pattern this evening by defeating Brighton 2-0, courtesy of goals from Cristian Romero and Harry Kane.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 6.5 – Didn’t have much to do tonight beyond knocking it around at the back, but that’s the way we like it.

Matt Doherty – 7 – Made some nice late runs down the right and was neat and tidy in possession. Could have got a few more crosses in and was quiet in the second half.

Cristian Romero – 8.5 – I’m not sure how much credit we can give him for the goal, but well done to him anyway. Defended really well high up the pitch too. Such a driving force down the right side in an attacking sense tonight. Yellow cards a problem again though.

Eric Dier – 8.5 – Tottenham’s best defender. After picking up a nasty elbow to the face early on, he pulled on a bandage and proceeded to get his head on everything. He picked out a fair few nice balls down the centre of the pitch between the lines to start attacks too.

Ben Davies – 7 – A rather quiet and tidy performance from Davies. While Romero kept pushing up and getting forward on the right, he stayed disciplined on the left.

Sergio Reguilon – 7 – A much better performance this evening both offensive and defensively. I just want to see him cross more to Kane because he has a lovely left-footed delivery on him. Had two good chances to score but still doesn’t quite have that cutting edge.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 8 – Really underrated performance out there. Sat deep to cover for any defenders pushing up the pitch and dictated the tempo, while also picking some nice passes when the opportunity came.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 8.5 – Bentancur plays the game at his own pace and it is delightful to watch. He also has a real talent for picking those little balls between the lines and around the corner, which you need to beat the press and start an attack. Fantastic assist for Kane.

Dejan Kulusevski – 7.5 – Credit to him for taking the shot on that led to Tottenham’s opener. He should have scored a goal of his own minutes later when he went through 1v1.

Heung-min Son – 6.5 – A very quiet game from Son. Whether he ran off the shoulder of the defence or dropped deep, it just didn’t seem to happen for him. Not for a lack of trying though.

Harry Kane – 8 – Missed a glorious chance in the early stages when he missed an open goal from a tight angle. Really struggled to find time and space when he dropped deep too. But Harry Kane does what Harry Kane does, scoring goals and breaking records.

Substitutes:

Lucas Moura – 5 – Came on for a short cameo but didn’t get too much of the ball.

Emerson Royal – 5 – See above.

Steven Bergwijn – N/A
