Opinion: Tottenham player ratings from the defeat to Pacos de Ferreira

Tottenham Hotspur got their European campaign off to a losing start this evening in Portugal as Pacos de Ferreira ran away deserved 1-0 winners.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Pierluigi Gollini – 5 – Had very little to do but his few aerial claims and passes from the back were calm and collected. No complaints at all. Love to see a keeper wear a cap!

Matt Doherty – 4 – He was in on that right-hand side all day long, yet his teammates only found him a handful of times. The end product was also lacking and passing was poor.

Cameron Carter-Vickers – 3 – Seemed to struggle both on and off the ball, especially in the air against some physical players. Too many mistakes in simple situations. Played them onside for the Pacos de Ferreira goal.

Cristian Romero – 6 – Calm on the ball, while also being no-nonsense in the air/tackle. Slight mistake maybe on the Pacos de Ferreira goal and a little impatient at times. If anything, he got worse as the night went on, to be honest.

Ben Davies – 5 – A typically steady and solid performance without being incredible. Wore the captain’s armband and looked more comfortable in that left-sided centre-back role.

Ryan Sessegnon – 6 – Essentially a first pre-season match back from injury, it was always going to be sloppy. It was more about minutes for Sess tonight. He improved so much as the game went on though.

Harry Winks – 3 – Really disappointed with Winks this evening. He was sloppy on the ball, gave away possession endlessly and gave away so many fouls too. Not good from a senior player.

Giovani Lo Celso – 4 – Looked brighter than Winks but not too much. Seemed to be playing within himself a little. A few nice moments here and there but not what you would expect from the Argentine.

Nile John – 4 – Ran his socks off but it just didn’t happen for him. No complaints as such, it just was not his night. Harsh to take him off at half-time.

Bryan Gil – 5 – Started the match so well with some positive runs down the left but faded a little as the game went on. Lots to be excited about but still a long way to go.

Dane Scarlett – 5 – I felt sorry for Scarlett out there. He made some terrific runs and was a victim of a lack of creativity from his teammates I feel.

Substitutions –

Jack Clarke – 4 – Didn’t do enough after coming on.

J’Neil Bennett – N/A

Maksim Paskotsi – N/A
