Opinion: Tottenham player ratings from the woeful defeat to Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur followed up their disappointing defeat against Liverpool in mid-week with an even worse one against Brighton this evening.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 5 – Good save in the 56th minute from close range. Had little to do beyond that tonight.

Moussa Sissoko – 3 – Was lined up at right-wing-back but did little of note going forward. Spurs needed a flying source up pace up and down that side but were far from it.

Davinson Sanchez – 3 – Always looks to be running around like a headless chicken, not quite sure of who he should be marking or what space he should be occupying.

Toby Alderweireld – 5.5 – Still reads the game okay but it’s as if his legs can’t always take him where he needs to be. What a block at the end of the game though.

Joe Rodon – 5 – Seems to be the best of a bad bunch at the moment. Still has a few wobbly moments as he gets used to the Premier League but equally promising signs too.

Ben Davies – 2 – Much like Sissoko, Davies offered very little width beyond receiving the ball and passing it backwards again. No drive or ambition which is needed at wing-back. Also didn’t track the runner for the opening Brighton goal.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 6 – Looks like a man trying to do the job of two these days. At times, seems like the only player who really cares about the result.

Tanguy Ndombele – 6 – Put in a lot of effort at both ends tonight but there was little he could do to drag Tottenham to a result. Went off injured at the 75-minute mark.

Heung-min Son – 3.5 – The man who usually steps up in the absence of Harry Kane but Son was barely in the game tonight.

Steven Bergwijn – 5.5 – The one man who consistently looked to receive the ball and make some driving runs in the final third, albeit without support. Felt sorry for him at times.

Gareth Bale – 3 – Played the game at walking pace and, worryingly, you get the feeling that he is no longer capable of much beyond that. A shame to see.

Carlos Vinicius – 5 – Came on at half-time and gave a focal point. Carved a couple of chances for himself.

Lucas Moura – 3 – Couldn’t recall what he did after coming on.

Erik Lamela – 3 – See above.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. We just have to shift deadwood like Moura, Lamela, get younger hungry players in. We are so weak at full back. Aurier has his bad moments, but is ok. Davies and Doherty are hopeless. Davies wouldn’t get into any other top 6 side. Reguillon was badly missed. Midfield looks unbalanced. Hojberg and Ndombele have too much to do. It needs a 3rd player back in there. Not Winks as he just hits it 10 yards backwards or sideways all the time. Vinicius did ok. Should have started. Biggest problem is the manager. Negative formation, tactics. Horrible to the players. Likes of Alli (not injured) nowhere near the team. Our games are just horrible to watch. Levy made this appointment and yes, Mourinho was a good manager. But much older now and the game has moved on. We need a younger manager with attacking football and bright ideas. This is horrible and should never have happened. Top 4 is over and it’s still January.

  2. I can’t take this any more. I’ve always been behind every manager we’ve had, but Jose’s tactics are beyond annoying. He’s not coaching a school team, he’s the manager of a so called Big 6 team, that a club fighting a relegation battle made us look stupid. Please, Please can we get a new manager now who can get us back to at least competing against these so called smaller clubs.

  3. Sack Jose immediately. He is destroying our team and our club. We are a pathetic shadow of the side Poch created. Jose will be the death of Spurs. No, sorry Jose IS the death of Spurs. Get rid of him NOW!

  4. Dire and unwatchable – I gave up before before half time having struggled through the Liverpool game 3 days before. Mourinho must go, this is not how Spurs should play. Counted passes from Davies (prior to switching channels), 3 were forward, 13 were back!!!! Hardly surprising we can’t get toward and score if this is the plan. I can’t remember the last time I watched a game and enjoyed it! Time for some major changes including the manager.

  5. Agree with all the comments above. Mourinho is taking our club for a ride and don’t be fooled by this man he doesn’t care just look at what he’s brought in with him just two descent signings and his first flop has already gone No spurs fan can tell me that Rose Alli Gazzinegga Sessagnon and Skipp are not a hell of a lot better than what Mourinho has been using in his squad and don’t get me started on his formations and tactics and the players he uses for them because you can all see there is no plan the man is living on his past reputation when will Levy wake up and smell the coffee get rid of this man he’s destroying our club.
