Opinion: Tottenham would be crazy not to offer this player a new three-year deal

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back, Jan Vertonghen, has just one year left on his contract, meaning that the Belgian could leave on a free in the summer of 2020.

Since joining Spurs, Vertonghen has been a mainstay in that back line, and has forged an irreplaceable bond with Toby Alderweireld as a central two.

In this day and age, footballers, especially centre-backs, can continue playing well into their thirties, so I don’t see Vertonghen’s 32-years of age to be a problem.

Take a look at Jan’s performance at left wing-back against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last season. One goal. One assist. Man of the match. Did he look like a player getting old in the tooth to you?

Few players in the Prem are more consistent or more under-rated that Vertonghen, in my opinion. I see no reason why Spurs should not be offering their vice-captain an extra three-year deal.

I am all for bringing in youth, but you simply must have experience to back it up, and Vertonghen brings that and then some.

The defender also seems keen to remain at the club, and sounds as if he is just waiting for that new contract offer (Sky Sports).

I saw give him three years, up his wages slightly, keep him in a Lilywhite shirt and reward him for his service!
