Opinion: Tottenham’s three winners and three losers of the week

From beating the champions on their own patch to losing to bottom of the table Burnley just five days later, it has been a rather strange week. However, strange is the norm at Tottenham Hotspur

After a huge and dramatic win against Manchester City, a lot of fans were rightly optimistic of a resurgence; Conte seemed happy, and it seemed as if we were back on track.

As the Burnley game drew closer however, the Spurs fans fears began to creep in – how spursy would It be to lose to Burnley after defeating the English champions.

Unfortunately, our worst fears were realised, and just like that, the honeymoon surrounding the Manchester City victory is over.

So, who shone and who disappointed in this week’s rollercoaster that is Spurs?

Winners

Harry Kane

I mean what can we even say about Harry Kane. We are so fortunate to have a player of this quality and I really fear where we would be without him.

Against Manchester City, Harry Kane put in what I believe to be his best shift in a Spurs shirt. He did everything there was to do on that pitch and if it wasn’t for a narrow offside would have had a hattrick.

He showed off his superb passing range once again and showed to the world that he is still one of Europe’s top strikers, despite a poor statistical campaign.

Dejan Kulusevski

There aren’t many better things you can do on a full debut than score at the Ethiad in the opening five minutes.

Dejan had a fantastic game, grabbing a goal and assist and offering something new to Tottenham’s front three. His end product is already proving to be more effective than Lucas Moura’s.

At a young age also, this singing might prove to be a clever bit of business.

Rodrigo Bentancur

For me, the Uruguayan international was one of the best players on the pitch this past Saturday. His work rate and drive in the heart of the midfield was refreshing to see.

He was all over the pitch and always made himself available in the heart of midfield. He protected the back line with some crunching tackles and broke up play in the midfield.

Although he didn’t start brilliantly against Burnley, I believe his removal at half-time was to Tottenham’s detriment.

Thus, showing just how important he is to the team already.

Losers

Emerson Royal

As the days go by, it is becoming increasingly confusing as to why Spurs were not in the market for a Right wing back in January.

Our two options haven’t exactly set the league alight and whilst my hopes were high for Emerson at the beginning, it feels like even Aurier was a better option.

His end product against Burnley was abysmal once again and it doesn’t even seem like he has the right attitude to improve on his game.

All round just a disappointing signing.

Ryan Sessegnon

Once again, we head to the wing backs for our loser’s column. This time it is the left wing back who has let himself down.

When we signed Ryan, it seemed like he had the world at his feet, an exciting young talent.

However, it just hasn’t happened for him, and his confidence seems so low. Against Burnley he was poor, and it seems as if despite their being a player somewhere in there, we won’t be seeing it in a Spurs shirt.

This problem is extremely frustrating as a Conte system is so reliant on the full backs.

Hopefully with some time, there is still hope for Sessegnon.

Harry Winks

Despite seeing some improvements form the former England international since the arrival of Conte, those improvements were nowhere to be seen against Burnley

He came on against Burnley and if anything, he made the team worse, rather than improving it and changing the game.

Hopefully the clouds will pass over Spurs, and we can get back to winning ways against Leeds.
