Opinion: Tottenham’s top five player of the season contenders if the campaign stopped now

The exact future of the footballing calendar remains unknown, so we wanted to take a look at our five Spurs player of the season contenders if the season was cancelled today.

5) Serge Aurier

We have gone with the Ivorian due to his ever presence in the side since Jose Mourinho took over. There is no doubt that we have seen an improvement from Aurier this season, which has been awarded by Jose Mourinho in his team selections. There have also been healthy contributions in terms of goals and assists from the right-back, with Aurier being the clubs highest goal-scoring defender (TransferMarkt). However, the erratic nature of the player is still present. It is also frustrating to see the inconsistencies in Aurier’s crossing. Despite an improved season, we would like to see the full-back area improved come the summer.

4) Moussa Sissoko

The engine of Tottenham Hotspur. Moussa Sissoko is adored by the Tottenham faithful and, quite frankly, has been missed in the side as of late. There is a confidence and power to his game that Spurs find hard to replace. Before his injury, Sissoko was also adding goals to his game under Mourinho. It is always refreshing to see the driving runs of Sissoko when he is in the side. As the Frenchman returned to first-team training this week (Football London), it is a delight to have Sissoko back in the squad.

3) Giovani Lo Celso

It took a while for Lo Celso to settle at the club. A hip injury sustained on international duty led to the midfielder missing eight matches early in his Spurs career (TransferMarkt). It was a shame not to see the Argentinian flourish under Mauricio Pochettino, but he has certainly stepped things up of late and become a shining late in quite a dark period for the club. His efforts were rewarded in the form of a permanent transfer from Real Betis and a five-year deal in January. Despite not having many actual goals and assists to his name, it is important to recognise just how good a player Giovani Lo Celso is.

2) Heung-Min Son

When news became apparent that Heung-Min Son could miss a large portion of the season after his injury against Aston Villa, it was a huge blow. Tottenham haven’t looked the same since. Prior to this, Son was once again having a great season in terms of his goals for the club. A total of nine league goals and eight assists (TransferMarkt) is certainly a great return for the attacker. Heung-Min Son is simply becoming priceless to Tottenham. A player who is just as dangerous out wide as he is as a striker. The work that Son does, especially during the injuries to Harry Kane, shouldn’t go unnoticed.

  1. Harry Kane

We had to go with Harry Kane as our player of the year so far, although it is just so frustrating to have another season plagued by injury. The centre forward was having a great campaign both for club and country prior to his injury against Southampton in January (TransferMarkt). He had scored a total of 17 goals this season in all competitions, including six goals in five Champions League appearances (TransferMarkt).

We were also astonished to see that Harry Kane hasn’t won player of the year at Spurs over the past four seasons (MyFootballFacts).

In a season to forget for the most part, who would you have as your player of the year?
