Opinion: Why Christian Eriksen should be dropped against Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur are now under one week away from the start of the Premier League season and talk is beginning to turn to who will start in the Aston Villa match.

Pochettino will have an embarrassment of riches to look towards for the opening weekend, as not only the majority of his squad are fit, but so many have played well in pre-season.

However, if I were the Argentine, I would not be playing Christian Eriksen in the opening match.

It may be tempting to give him a start as a statement to other clubs, the fans, and even Eriksen himself that the player is valued and wanted at Tottenham, but I believe Poch needs to prioritise fitness and form.

Eriksen has not been handed a huge number of minutes in pre-season compared to some of his teammates, and one of his fellow playmakers has been in great form.

Erik Lamela has scored in the matches against Juventus and Bayer Munich, as well as putting in consistently class performances throughout the past month.

On form and fitness alone, as I think all decisions should be made, Lamela should be starting in that attacking mid spot ahead of Eriksen and Alli against Villa.

What do you think?
