Opinion: Why Dier could be a solution to Pochettino’s problems

After the worst Spurs result in recent memory, fans have all been providing their own solutions to the problems. It was evident to see that Spurs were missing a true defensive midfielder on Tuesday, as the back four were pulled apart time and time again.

It is Dier’s versatility that comes as a blessing for me. While the team is low in confidence, I would move to a back three with Toby, Dier, and Jan, making for a more secure central defence.

Also, if all goes well in-game, then Dier can easily move forward into midfield and let a current midfielder move into a more attacking position. Dier is a vocal presence, is good on the ball, and can pick a pass, three things that Spurs need in abundance right now.

Playing with wing-backs will enable the team to attack with the reassurance that they have an extra defender to cover them if needed.

If playing with a back three, then a midfield two of Ndombele and Winks would be the partnership I would choose. As much as Sissoko has made improvements, Ndombele is a better version and his eye for a pass has been displayed. Whio knows, maybe Sissoko could even cover at right-back instead.

This leaves three attacking positions, which I would fill with Lamela, Kane, and Son, Kane playing the deeper number 10 role.

Kane has the vision and passing to replace Eriksen, who some fans do not want near the team at the moment.

Son has been our best attacking player this season and surely is the first name on the team sheet. The third position should go to Lamela based on his improved performances this season and his tenacity is something that would be a good example for the rest of the squad.

This would leave us with: Lucas, Alli, Eriksen, Lo Celso, Sessegnon and Parrott.
Defensively, we would have: Sanchez, Sissoko, Wanyama, Foyth and a mixture of full-backs in reserve.

This shows that we have great options to choose from and, when in form, we have one of the best squads in the league. However, at the moment we need to go back to basics, get some wins on the board and start to look like Spurs again!
