Opinion: Why I am strangely optimistic about next season for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have been woeful this season, that much is certain. Whether the players have fallen short or whether Mourinho’s tactics are outdated is a debate for another time.

However, as disappointing as this campaign has been, I am very optimistic and excited about what is to come next season.

It was recently pointed out that Tottenham have dropped 13 points from winning positions in the final 15 minutes of games this season. And that was before conceding late against United again today.

While one angle of this is Tottenham cannot hold a lead in the final portion of a game, there is another point to highlight. Spurs have a team that can consistently put them in the lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

Tottenham will, without a doubt, dip into the market for at least one or two new central defenders and a right-back this summer.

With a defensive overhaul and an improved spine down the centre of the team, Spurs should be able to drastically cut those dropped points.

Even if the Lilywhites still dropped seven of those 13 points, they would be in the top four race this season.

However, with an improved defence, you also create a platform from which to build in an attacking sense, hopefully leading to more goals, more wins and a greater sense of comfort.

Call me an optimist but, with Kane, Son, Ndombele, Hojbjerg, Reguilon and more to build around, I think this Spurs side has the start of something great.

It all depends on whether Levy can recruit the right defenders…
