Opinion: Why Spurs fans should not get carried away by Aurier performance

Tottenham Hotspur’s right-back problems looked to be a thing of the past against Crystal Palace this weekend, as Pochettino welcomed Serge Aurier back into the starting XI.

Aurier had not been used at all in pre-season and had only featured on the bench as an unused substitute in the Premier League up until then.

With Walker-Peters, Foyth, and Sanchez out injured, Aurier was given a chance to impress at home to the Eagles and impress he did.

The Ivorian set up two of the first three goals in a 4-0 win for the Lilywhites, while also keeping a clean sheet and playing very well in general.

However, I believe that some Spurs fans need to calm down about this performance. Yes, Aurier played well, but that is no reason to think the RB problem is solved.

Aurier had little to do defensively, which has always been his issue, and he also had a big point to prove yesterday.

I worry, like I believe he has in the past, that he will drift away again as soon as he feels comfortable in the starting line up.

I want to see five or six consistent and high-quality performances in terms of defending, attacking, and effort from Serge before I will be convinced of his ability to be a first-choice for the full season.

Meanwhile, Walker-Peters and Foyth need to push the ex-PSG man all the way now.
