Opinion: Why the North London Derby could be make or break for Spurs this season

Tottenham Hotspur are only playing their fourth match of the season today, but it comes against their bitter rivals Arsenal in the North London Derby.

Spurs have already dropped five points this season, including a shock defeat at home to Newcastle last weekend.

However, a big result at the Emirates could be the perfect kickstarter for Tottenham’s season after a mixed bag after the first three games.

Spurs were poor against Aston Villa, but got the job done. They then went to the Etihad and somehow managed to scrape a point, which is more than almost every club will get there this season.

The defeat to the Magpies was a huge blow, but you always get a couple of shocks like this in a season. As long as Spurs can cut them down to a minimum, they should be fine.

A North London Derby could be just the ticket for Tottenham in terms of forcing the team to wake up, put some effort in, and show the high press and determination we associate with a Pochettino side.

On the other hand, a heavy defeat at the hands of Arsenal could send the media into uproar regarding Tottenham’s hopes this season and the future of Pochettino, no matter what amount of truth lies behind the rumours.

Four points from four games in a dreadful 2019 would be an absolute disaster for Spurs, not to mention the stick from Gunners fans on Twitter.

The term make or break may sound dramatic, but this game has the potential to get Spurs out of their awful funk, or send them deeper into the mud.
