Opinion: Why this Ajax star would be a disaster signing for Spurs after £35m links

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Ajax keeper Andre Onana in a report by the Sun this week, but I believe that this would be a disaster signing for the Lilywhites.

Onana is said to cost around £35m, if Spurs sell Hugo Lloris first as the Ajax man is unwilling to act as an understudy to the World Cup winner.

While I admit that Lloris is probably over the hill and tumbling down the other side now, with his game featuring more and more mistakes each season, I do not think that Onana is the answer.

What Spurs have in Lloris is one of the very best shot-stoppers in the world, but someone who lacks decision-making capabilities, confidence in the air when claiming, and a keeper who is good with his feet.

From what I have seen of Onana, he possesses all the same shortcomings in his game, without being as good a shot-stopper as Lloris.

I believe Onana would be a step down and Spurs would be stuck with him for a number of years before they would be able to excuse another new signing between the sticks.

Spurs should be looking for someone who can play out from the back as Pochettino wants, as well as being competent at saving. Perhaps Gazzaniga deserves a real shot.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. If you watch Lucas goals against Onana, he appeared to have a problem going to his left, despite being pretty good in most other departments I seen. He really should’ve saved 2 of Lucas goals.

  2. Have to agree, he reminds me of Gomes who arrived from the Eredivisie on the back of some eye catching saves but they really were a case of flattering to deceive

From what I’ve seen of Onana he is not a consistently good keeper in much the same way, pulls off the occassional great save that flatters, but lacks in key areas of his game and prone top some real bloopers

Much as I think Hugo’s weaknesses and mistakes are costing us more than his normally excellent shot stopping saves us and we should be looking to replace or hope that Gazza can step up, Onana does not look the answer

  3. Andre Onana is a rubbish keeper. Gazza is much better than this guy!!

Try and sign any one of these two keeper’s at the end of the season instead:

    Nick Pope
    Dean Henderson

I have been watching Ajax for over two year and Andre Onana is about as good as Heurelho Gomes.

    No Thanks!!!
