Opinion: Why this Ajax star would be a disaster signing for Spurs after £35m links

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Ajax keeper Andre Onana in a report by the Sun this week, but I believe that this would be a disaster signing for the Lilywhites.

Onana is said to cost around £35m, if Spurs sell Hugo Lloris first as the Ajax man is unwilling to act as an understudy to the World Cup winner.

While I admit that Lloris is probably over the hill and tumbling down the other side now, with his game featuring more and more mistakes each season, I do not think that Onana is the answer.

What Spurs have in Lloris is one of the very best shot-stoppers in the world, but someone who lacks decision-making capabilities, confidence in the air when claiming, and a keeper who is good with his feet.

From what I have seen of Onana, he possesses all the same shortcomings in his game, without being as good a shot-stopper as Lloris.

I believe Onana would be a step down and Spurs would be stuck with him for a number of years before they would be able to excuse another new signing between the sticks.

Spurs should be looking for someone who can play out from the back as Pochettino wants, as well as being competent at saving. Perhaps Gazzaniga deserves a real shot.
