Opinion: Willian vs Fraser – Which would be the better free transfer for Tottenham

Both Willian and Ryan Fraser could become available on free transfers this summer as their respective contracts at Chelsea and Bournemouth inch towards a close.

With Tottenham said to be prioritising free signings and loan moves in order to save money amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, which on these two would represent the best option?

Willian and Fraser both come with heaps of Premier League experience, although the Brazilian has been far more used to playing at the top of the game.

However, Ryan Fraser is just 26-years-old and has far more room to grow than Willian who turns 32 this year.

Willian has managed seven goals and six assists in all competitions this season (tarnsfermarkt), compared to Fraser’s one goal and four assists (transfermarkt).

Willian has a career total of 608 professional games and 99 goals (Wikipedia), compared to Fraser’s 247 games and 30 goals (Wikipedia).

The question of who would be the better signing for Spurs depends on your perspective. In my view, either one of these would be a stop-gap for the next season or two, rather than a long-term signing aimed at taking Tottenham to the next level.

With that in mind, despite his age, I believe that Willian would represent the best value for money this summer.

Spurs need players who have experience in winning titles and playing Champions League football, while showing a certain sense of consistent quality to their game.

Ryan Fraser is untested in Europe and only has 11 international caps to his name. Not only this, but the Scottish winger has failed to kick on from his superb 2018/19 season, looking far from impressive throughout the current campaign.

My verdict – Willian
