Ornstein explains many expect Spurs target to be available for free soon

David Ornstein has said that many in the game expect rumoured Tottenham target Wilfried Zaha to leave Crystal Palace on a free when his contract runs out next summer.

The Athletic revealed after the summer transfer window slammed shut that Tottenham explored a late move for Zaha in the final hours. However, it was explained that the Lilywhites were unable to push through a deal for the 29-year-old before the deadline.

Zaha has made a bright start to the season, with six goal contributions in ten Premier League matches so far (Transfermarkt) but his future remains up in the air, with his contract at Selhurst Park set to run out at the end of the season.

Roma Giallorossa reported earlier this month that AS Roma are keeping an eye on the winger, and are exploring the possibility of a free transfer next summer.

Ornstein has said that he expects several clubs to be looking closely at Zaha’s current situation. The journalist explained that while Palace are keen to tie the 29-year-old down to a new contract, there are suggestions that he could leave as a free agent.

Ornstein told Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE Podcast (as relayed by The Daily Mail): “Palace would dearly love to sign Zaha to sign him to a new contract I’m sure. But with free agency looming and he’s never had that big move that many anticipated.

“Of course, he went to Manchester United and it didn’t work out but since then we’ve seen Arsenal linked with him, we’ve seen Tottenham at various points, and we’ve seen Chelsea last summer,’

“That move hasn’t happened. Palace value him so highly as they know without him there’s a good chance they’d be in a relegation scrap. So they’ve always set a very high asking price.

“There’ll be a number of clubs who will look at him and wonder if they can get him for nothing in the summer of 2023. There’ll be conversations I’m sure. Many in the game feel he’ll hold out and go as a free agent and play in the Champions League.”

The only issue with signing Zaha is the fact that he is at his best off the left – a position which is occupied by Son Heung-min. However, having said that a chance to sign an attacker of his quality for free, could well be tempting for Tottenham.
