Ornstein questions whether Conte breached Spurs contract with his outburst

David Ornstein has questioned whether Antonio Conte breached his contract with his public outburst on Saturday and suggested that the Italian might be trying to get himself sacked during the international break.

The fallout from Conte’s rant in the post-match press conference on Saturday is continuing to play out and it remains to be seen whether the club will decide to cut ties with the Italian.

Alasdair Gold reported via Football.London following the press conference that the Italian had clarified to the Spurs board that his comments were solely aimed at the players.

However, The Daily Mail revealed yesterday that the Tottenham head coach held crisis talks with the club following his outburst and suggested that Daniel Levy might reconsider his plans of sticking with Conte until the end of the season.

The publication also suggested that a number of players at the club have grown irritated by the 53-year-old’s manner and believe that the negativity he conveys in public has affected the morale of the squad.

Ornstein does not believe that Conte’s rant was aimed at the Tottenham hierarchy but the journalist seemed to hint that it might be a sackable offence.

He told NBC Sports about the Italian’s monologue: “It was jaw-dropping.

“But I think what it underlines the most is that the end of Antonio Conte is nigh. It’s more a question of when rather than if he’s going to leave Tottenham.

“There is a scheduled day off at Tottenham today so it’s business as usual. And then comes the international break so there is a chance for Spurs to calm the situation and make a decision.

“Those comments were remarkable. But I’m not sure they were pointed so squarely at the owners as some have made out. A lot of what he said was true but it won’t have gone down well with the players and staff members of the club.

“It’s something Daniel Levy will need to consider carefully. Is Conte in breach of his contract by making those comments? Is he trying to get himself sacked? Does Daniel Levy want to pay him out to go for the remaining three months of his contract?”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Conte had not lost the dressing room already before Saturday’s game, he is sure to have done so now.

There is really no point now in sticking with him until the end of the season, given how low the morale of the squad would be at the moment.

We would almost certainly have a better chance of getting into the top four if we sacked Conte immediately and put Ryan Mason in charge on an interim basis.
