‘Outstanding’ – Some Spurs fans react to Matt Doherty’s display for Ireland

Some Tottenham fans were left extremely impressed with Matt Doherty’s performance for the Republic of Ireland in their 0-0 draw against Portugal on Thursday.

Doherty has endured a disappointing year and a half since swapping Wolves for Tottenham in the summer of 2020.

The 29-year-old struggled to get a run of matches in the starting eleven last season, with Serge Aurier being preferred by Jose Mourinho.

He might have been hoping that Nuno Espirito Santo’s arrival at Spurs in the summer would have helped kickstart his Tottenham career given how he thrived under the Portuguese coach at Wolves.

However, Doherty struggled for game time under Nuno as well and given the bright start that Emerson Royal has made in North London, the former Wolves man seemingly has his work cut out to force himself into the starting eleven this season.

Doherty started in his favoured right-wing-back role for the Republic of Ireland on Thursday and he was a threat to the Portuguese defence all game, being involved in some excellent combination play down the right.

The Tottenham man thought he had given his country all three points when he put the ball in the back of the net in stoppage time but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Rui Patricio.

Reacting to Doherty’s performance, some Spurs fans on social media have suggested that he could perhaps finally live up to his potential under Conte.

Spurs Web Opinion

Emerson Royal has been very impressive over recent weeks but there is no doubt that he needs competition for the right-wing-back role.

Despite his struggles at Spurs, we know from Doherty’s times at Wolves that he has the attributes to shine in that role.

So, the 29-year-old could certainly prove a useful squad player for Tottenham over the course of the season.
