‘Over £600m in five years’ – Ex-Spurs manager reveals Daniel Levy misconception

Tim Sherwood has claimed there is a ‘misconception’ that Daniel Levy does not spend money in the transfer market and believes the Tottenham chairman will back Antonio Conte in the summer.

Spurs are set for a key transfer window under Conte, who led the club back into the Champions League following a resurgent run of form in the second half of the Premier League season.

The Italian has allegedly set out a list of demands to the club to make his playing squad more competitive (Telegraph) and he could have significant funds at his disposal to achieve that, after Tottenham confirmed that owners ENIC are to inject £150 million into the club.

A club statement said the money will allow for ‘greater flexibility’ to make further investments both on and off the field.

And reacting to his former club’s recent cash injection, Sherwood backed Spurs to support Conte significantly after being convinced by the tactician’s work since being appointed back in November.

He also took the opportunity to dispel claims that chief Levy keeps his chequebook closed by pointing to £600 million worth of spending in the last five years.

Sherwood told  Premier League Productions (24/05/22 at 3:55 pm): “I think Levy backs every manager he has ever had. There is this misconception that he doesn’t spend money.

“If you look at the money that has been spent, it’s over £600 million in five years. That isn’t small change.

“But, Antonio Conte won’t be there if he’s not going to be backed. He doesn’t need the job. He just wants to win. Everyone is eating out of his hands. All the players are as well.

“If Daniel Levy decides he doesn’t want to spend the money that Antonio thinks the club need, then he will walk away and he will go and get a job somewhere else.

“Daniel is in a very tricky position now. But I am sure he will [back him]. I am sure Antonio has convinced him that he is the right man.”

Levy will have been convinced by Conte after that second half of the season and by Spurs returning to the Champions League under him.

Managers like that do not come around too often, so he has to make it count by giving him the resources necessary to make silverware and success a reachable prospect.
