Overmars: We are in contact with Alderweireld and Vertonghen over Ajax return

Ajax’s technical director Marc Overmars has said that the club is in contact with Tottenham center halves Toby Alderweiereld and Jan Vertonghen over a possible return to the club in the future.

The Belgium pair have had a great career in the Premier League with Tottenham and have established themselves as two of the best defenders in the world. While Vertonghen is into his 7th season with Tottenham, Alderweireld is now into his 4th season with the club.

The two have formed one of the most formidable partnerships in the league and have been crucial for Tottenham’s performances over the last few years. However, both 31-year-old Vertonghen and 29-year-old Alderwiereld’s current deals expire in the summer of 2020 with the latter’s contract having a release clause of £25 million starting next summer.

Both players have previously spoken about how much they enjoyed their time at Ajax and their intention to return there one day. Marc Overmars, when posed with a question bout the pair’s possible return, told Ajax Tv, “I always read: Alderweireld wants to go back, Vertonghen wants to go back. But then I would like them to do that when they are fit and hungry for success.”

“Whether we have contact with them? That certainly happens, yes. But nothing has been promised.”

Just because the club is in contact with the players, of course, doesn’t mean they are going back anytime soon but if the pair do want to return back to the Amsterdam one day, it does explain Toby’s intention to bag one final big contract before he does so.
