‘Astonishing’ – Michael Owen comments on the drop in form of Tottenham player

Michael Owen has suggested that Son Heung-min is perhaps no longer one of the best players in the Premier League compared to the level he was at few years ago, given the drop-off he has had this season.

After he won the Premier League Golden Boot for the first time in his career last season, many would have expected the South Korean to kick on under Antonio Conte this campaign.

However, the 30-year-old has had a poor season by his own high standards, having found the back of the net just six times in the league so far in 2022-23 (Transfermarkt).

Son produced one his better performances of the campaign in the 3-1 win over Forest on Saturday and his 62nd-minute strike means that the forward is just one goal away from entering the Premier League 100 club.

Owen admitted that it is ‘strange’ to see how much the Spurs star has dropped off this season and suggested that the best players do not go through such an extended lean patch.

The pundit told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (11/03/23 at 5:10 pm): “Nearly into the 100 Premier League club and Son deserves to because he has been an incredible player over the years. But, this season, has been very strange.

“You don’t really associate world-class players with having big, big dips in form. Okay, two or three games. It’s astonishing because, you could argue two or three years ago, that he is right up there in the top handful of players in the Premier League.

“The most effective at one point. But this season has been a real drop-off. I don’t know whether it’s confidence or the team he is playing in. It’s good to see him flying again.”

Son has always been a confidence player and tends to score his goals in concentrated patches. Unfortunately, he has not been able to have such a purple patch so far this season.

However, I also think that the coaching staff need to take some blame for not producing a system that brings the best out of a world-class goalscorer and the fact that the link-up with Ivan Perisic has clearly not worked.
