Paratici reacts to Spurs signing Danjuma and the option to buy him permanently

Fabio Paratici has revealed that Tottenham are pleased to have signed Arnaut Danjuma on loan, claiming that several big clubs tried to sign the forward over the last few transfer windows.

While Spurs’ pursuit of Porro was well documented right from the start of the transfer window, the Danjuma signing seemed to come out of the blue.

Tottenham reportedly swooped in just as the 25-year-old was on the verge of signing for Everton, with the player having completed his medical at Goodison Park (The Athletic).

Danjuma has joined the North London club on an initial loan deal, with the Lilywhites thought to have the option to make the deal permanent for £21m (Rob Guest on Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast).

The Athletic even revealed a few days ago that Spurs had also tried to sign the Dutchman during last summer’s transfer window, having allegedly tried to include him as part of Giovani Lo Celso’s loan move to Villarreal.

While Paratici did not reveal whether Tottenham made a bid for Danjuma last summer, he did state that the La Liga club rejected a ‘big offer’ for the player.

The Spurs managing director of football told the club’s official website: “I think Danjuma will be really important, he can help us a lot.

“He is a player that for two or three years, in every transfer window, he was near to joining some big clubs and even in the last summer Villarreal rejected a big offer for him and when we got the opportunity to sign him, we took this opportunity.”

When asked if it was particularly pleasing to see Danjuma score on his Tottenham debut, Paratici responded: “It’s not about that because we believe in the player, we know the player so we are happy more for him because it’s a good debut and it’s a good injection of confidence.

“I think this is the most important thing. We have the option to buy and so we will see what happens in the next five months.”

Paratici and Spurs might have been tracking Danjuma for a while but it was clear from the circumstances of the transfer that the Dutchman was not Tottenham’s top attacking target. It appeared as if the club decided to act swiftly to snap up the 25-year-old once they realised their Nicolo Zaniolo pursuit is likely to end unsuccessfully.
