Parlour claims Pochettino should ‘ignore’ star player under these circumstances

Mauricio Pochettino has had somewhat of a selection dilemma all season so far, with a number of his star players potentially leaving on free transfers at the end of the season.

The likes of Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld, and Jan Vertonghen have been loyal and high-performing servants for Spurs under the Pochettino reign for a number of years.

However, with them potentially leaving in 2020, Pochettino is handed the awkward dilemma of whether to play them or bring in less experienced and younger players to replace them early.

Much has been said of Eriksen so far this season, with some fans claiming that the motivation is no longer there for the Great Dane.

Eriksen openly revealed that he wanted to leave Spurs in the summer, stating that he was after a step up and a new challenge away from North London (Ekstra Bladet).

Ex-Arsenal man, Ray Parlour, has now claimed that if Pochettino believes there are players who want to play for Spurs more than Eriksen, then he should be ignored.

He said (TalkSPORT): “If there are players who want to play for Tottenham more than Eriksen, then yes [I would ignore him].

“I know he’s a quality player, but sometimes you’ve got to say, ‘he’s going to do a better job for me, he’s going to try harder than Eriksen’.

“As much as he’s got good quality, [a different player] will put a shift in and work hard for the team and everybody around him.

“Sometimes you’ve got to be cruel.”
