Paul Gascoigne names ‘fantastic’ Tottenham teammate who had to be his Geordie translator

Paul Gascoigne has shared a funny story about his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate who he describes as ‘lethal‘.

Paul Gascoigne is widely regarded as one of the greatest England players of all time, and Tottenham Hotspur played an important part in his career.

The former attacking midfielder joined Spurs from Newcastle United for £2.2m and would later go on to make more than 100 appearances for the club.

Gascoigne was a man in his prime at the beginning of the 1990s. He helped England reach the World Cup semi-final and won the FA Cup with Tottenham, having scored a superb free kick against Arsenal in the semis.

Paul Gascoigne discusses his time with Chris Waddle at Tottenham

Gascoigne followed in the footsteps of Chris Waddle, who made the move from Newcastle to Spurs while he was entering into senior football. The pair would later go on to have spells in Scotland, and both played for Burnley too, although they were there in different years.

According to Gascoigne, Waddle looked out for him at Spurs and even helped resolve some communication issues between the England international and the rest of the Tottenham team.

He told talkSPORT: “Yeah, unbelievable. He [Waddle] was lethal.

“He was fantastic. Especially at Tottenham, you know, when I followed at Tottenham, when he looked after us, because he had already been there a year. And I don’t know why, but I needed a translator.

“Well, I say, but no one could understand what I was saying, they were like ‘Chris, what is he saying?’

“Chris had the translator for us, it was embarrassing. But yeah, he was, what a player, when he dropped his shoulder, half a crowd went out the stadium.”

Waddle left Spurs too soon

As good as Waddle was for Tottenham, he was unable to win silverware at the club. This is a theme which has continued over the years, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele and Cristian Eriksen never winning a trophy during their spells in North London. However, Heung-min Son broke the pattern by remaining long enough to lift a cup.

Waddle came close, reaching the FA Cup final with Spurs in 1987. However, they fell to defeat against Coventry United and he left two years before their success in 1991.
