Paul Merson believes Harry Kane may be hindering Spurs manager pursuit

Harry Kane has been immense at Spurs this season. However, the club is currently sat in seventh place. In addition to this, Tottenham are looking for a new manager, and Kane is consistently being linked with a move away.

If there was one man who flourished under Jose Mourinho it was the 27-year-old. With just three games to go this season, Kane has 21 goals and 13 assists (TransferMarkt). Such numbers have put the striker top in both categories for the campaign.

Many football fans may wonder why arguably the most complete striker in world football would stay in North London. Such mystery may be affecting the club’s search for a new manager, according to Arsenal legend Paul Merson (Standard).

There can be no doubt that the new manager will have a huge first summer at the club. With a rebuild needed, any coach would want to have Kane as a part of it.

However, Merson believes that the uncertainty around whether Kane will be a part of the rebuild will cause problems at Spurs.

The former Arsenal man wrote in his Daily Star column: “But if I’m a top manager looking at it from the outside, I’m thinking: ‘What’s happening with Harry Kane?’ Any plans you make go out the window on day one if Kane leaves Spurs – and it sounds like he might.

“The thing is, if Kane leaves Spurs, others will too. That team could break up. So it’s just not that attractive a job right now because of all the uncertainty.

“Look who’s failed there in recent times too. Mauricio Pochettino is a great manager. Couldn’t win there. Jose Mourinho is one of the greatest ever, and he struggled. I can see why managers are not exactly queuing around the block.

“Spurs might have to give Harry Kane a new contract. Throw money at him to stop him leaving. Otherwise, it could be hard to bring in a new manager.”

Such comments come just days after it was claimed that the club had their shortlist of managers ready (Football London).

It is going to be a make-or-break summer for many at Tottenham, with it being critical that a manager can put a smile on the face of both players and fans.

Spurs Web Opinion:

There can be no doubt that the future of Kane would have a bearing on the new manager. The England captain is one of the best players in the World, so any exit would cause a lot of damage. One can only hope that a new manager will be working with Kane next season.
