Paul Merson claims Brighton attacker would fit in well at a club like Spurs

Paul Merson has claimed that Brighton winger Leandro Trossard does not get the accolade he deserves and could easily play for a club like Tottenham Hotspur.

Trossard has been improving every season since joining Brighton from Genk back in 2019. The Belgian international, in many ways, epitomises the way the Seagulls play, marrying an impressive engine and tenacity with technical quality on the ball.

The winger, who has can also play through the middle, just enjoyed his most productive season in front of goal in 2021/22 since his move to the Premier League, finishing the campaign with eight goals and three assists (Transfermarkt).

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will be in the market for a winger this summer, with Steven Bergwijn confirming his intention to leave the North London club in search of regular game time (Algemeen Dagblad).

If Tottenham are scouring for a wide-man, they can get a lot worse than Trossard according to Merson, who suggested that the Brighton star would not look out of place at Antonio Conte’s side, or at a club like Manchester United or Everton.

The former Arsenal midfielder told SportsKeeda: “Leandro Trossard is such an intelligent footballer and a special, special player on his day.

“He isn’t always consistent, but he’s capable of playing in multiple positions across the frontline and moves the ball around well, I just don’t feel like he gets the accolades he deserves because he plays for Brighton.

“No disrespect to Brighton, but he can go higher and easily turn out for one of the top teams in the Premier League. He could go play for Manchester United or someone like that, but that won’t happen because he’s currently playing for Brighton.

“The fans will have a moan and question why a club of Manchester United’s stature should go in for a player like this, but he ticks a lot of boxes, even for teams like Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do think Trossard would be a decent squad player at Spurs in Antonio Conte’s system, although he definitely would not be a regular starter.

However, I believe that Conte would want to sign a forward like Richarlison, who can play across the front three, to replace Bergwijn rather than another winger like the Seagulls star.
