Paul Merson explains why he would be worried if he was a Tottenham fan

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have Paulo Gazzaniga to thank after the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Spurs took the lead in the first minute of the game when Harry Kane reacted quickest after Heung-min Son’s effort came back off the crossbar.

Liverpool threw wave after wave of attack forward but were unable to draw level in the first half due to a fine goalkeeping display from Paulo Gazzaniga.

The 27-year-old has been deputising for Hugo Lloris who suffered a dislocated elbow in the recent 3-0 defeat at Brighton.

Merson believes that Spurs fans should be concerned by the fact that their best player at Anfield was their goalkeeper and Liverpool could have won the match by seven or eight goals.

Spurs will travel to Merseyside for the second week in a row when they face Everton at Goodison Park, looking for their first away win in competitive football since January.

“I’d be so worried if I was Tottenham and I know they only got beaten 2-1, but what score could it have been? I know they had their chances and if Heung-Min Son goes round the goalkeeper and doesn’t hit the bar, it’s 2-0 and then it’s a different game but the best player on the pitch was the goalkeeper,” he told Sky Sports.

“That can’t be right if you’re a Tottenham fan. It could have been seven or eight and I’m not saying that because I played for Arsenal; it’s what I saw.”
