Paul Merson has his say on Dele Alli’s future at Tottenham

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has urged Dele Alli to fight for his place and work his way back into the Tottenham Hotspur starting eleven.

Dele has played just 66 minutes of Premier League football this season having been left out of Jose Mourinho’s squad in four of the eight matches played in all competitions (transfermarkt).

The midfielder was heavily linked with a loan switch to PSG during the summer transfer window with the French giants said to have made at least two attempts to take him to Ligue 1 with a £3.5million fee (The Sun).

He appeared off the bench in Sunday’s 6-1 demolition of Manchester United and found himself once again left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Merson has previously had somewhat controversial opinions on Spurs players, including when he claimed that Harry Kane will struggle to score 25 goals in a season under Jose Mourinho and may rethink his future in North London (Sky Sports).

On this occasion, the pundit has insisted that Dele needs to realise that he is at a high profile club and needs to prove himself to Jose Mourinho and get back into the side.

Merson shared his opinion on Dele on Sky Sports News (2:30pm, October 5, 2020): “He is at a top team, he is at a top team with top players and a top manager.

“He has got to fight himself back into the team. That’s what happens. When you are at a top club and playing in top teams, you only get two or three chances, and you are out of the team.”
