Paul Merson makes claim about difference between Spurs and Chelsea

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes Chelsea have a squad much stronger in depth than Tottenham this season.

Spurs head coach Nuno Espirito Santo already faced his first selection headache against Crystal Palace on Saturday, which saw his side swept aside with a number of key players missing.

The likes of Heung-min Son, Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero, Giovani Lo Celso and Steven Bergwijn were all part of the absent contingent as Spurs were beaten 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

To make matters worse, Spurs lost Eric Dier to injury and Japhet Tanganga to a one-match suspension during what was a disappointing return to Premier League action.

Ex-Gunners man Merson believes Nuno’s squad is already looking thin just a handful of games into the season and highlighted a stark contract between theirs and Chelsea’s.

Thomas Tuchel had the likes of Timo Werner, Jorginho, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell all at his disposal on the bench against Aston Villa, despite missing key figures N’Golo Kante, Reece James and Christian Pulisic.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (12:50 pm, September 11, 2021), Merson said: “You have got Tottenham there with three games in, and we are already saying they are very weak, it’s very light, their bench. We are never getting that with Chelsea this season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Despite a promising start to the season, it’s all starting to go a bit wrong regarding injuries and suspensions. It’s a bit unlucky for Nuno in that they’ve all come at the same time, and it reinforces the view that Spurs should have looked to bolster the squad more than they did over the summer.
