Paul Merson makes concerning prediction over what lies ahead for Tottenham

Former Arenal midfielder Paul Merson has made a bold prediction which will annoy many Spurs fans regarding Tottenham’s Premier League finish for next season.

The Sky Sports pundit has predicted that Spurs will not finish in the top four next season following their poor display this campaign and the strengthening of their rivals in recent transfer markets.

“I am watching Tottenham at the moment and I don’t see any fun. They must be thinking let’s just get this season done,” Merson said on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday.

“They are short and they need players. They have been shoe-ins for the top four but now they look a million miles off.”

It has been a turbulent season for Spurs, the comedown from losing in the Champions League final seems to have hit the players hard and a poor start to the season saw the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.

The arrival of Jose Mourinho had a short impact on the side, but in truth, the results have not really improved dramatically as Spurs find themselves with a possible bottom half finish.

“I worry for them but they have to buy into how Mourinho plays,” he added.

“It’s a clash of personalities at the moment. I don’t see any answer to this. I just think they will be an also-ran next season as well.”

Tottenham have qualified for the Champions League in the past four consecutive seasons, however, any faint hopes of Champions League football were all but dashed on Thursday with the heavy defeat to Sheffield United.

It is very hard to disagree with what Merson has said. This is not the same Tottenham which we saw just a season or two ago. Manchester United and Chelsea have strengthened dramatically and it is unlikely Daniel Levy will splash serious cash this summer.
