Paul Merson names the player Spurs should sign so Harry Kane can play further upfield

Paul Merson believes that Tottenham Hotspur should be lining up a move for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

The former Arsenal player has suggested that if Ward-Prowse was to swap the south coast for north London, it would mean that Harry Kane would not have to drop as deep into midfield to interlink the play and would instead be able to remain further up the pitch.

Ward-Prowse has made his mark against Tottenham this season, having scored in the 1-1 draw at St Mary’s in December and played an inspired role in their comeback at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when he laid on two assists to help his side to a 3-2 victory.

Kane has taken his creativeness to another level this season which was on display during the 3-2 win against Manchester City at the Etihad and also during the recent 4-0 win over Leeds.

Merson told Sky Sports News (1:27pm, March 5, 2022): “If I was Tottenham, I would be looking at Ward-Prowse because he can do what Kane can do. All of a sudden, Kane stays upfront.

“Ward-Prowse is the best English player in the country with a long-range pass. He hits 40-50 yards passes, he spreads the ball around the pitch.

“If I was Tottenham, I would be targeting him and then Kane stays upfront.”

Ward-Prowse would be a superb signing given his ability to create opportunities to midfield and also his deadly ability from free-kicks, something which Spurs have greatly missed since the departure of Christian Eriksen.
